Nove illustrazioni dell'inferno (2020-2021)
Project Type:
Portfolio of Original Compositions
Date:
Sept 2020-Sept 2021
Nove illustrazioni dell'inferno (English: Nine Illustrations of Hell) is constructed of nine pieces and concerns itself with the use of a work of literature as part of experimental compositional practice. The resultant compositions have been written and formulated with reference to Dante Alighieri’s Inferno—the first of three cantiche that Formulates La Divina Commedia (1320). Just as in Dante’s conception of the hell beneath us—condemning sinners in new, evermore imaginative methods with each passing level—this portfolio acts as a developmental account pertaining to the variable and extensive employment of alternative notation types and styles utilised in the composition of experimental music, and the ways in which they are interpreted. Directly using aspects of Dante Alighieri’s Nine Circles of Hell as their principal compositional foundation, the nine works found in this portfolio intended to demonstrate the methods by which extremes of notation have been utilised as part of the compositional process of experimental works. As such, each work demonstrates differing—and developmental—notational methods to their predecessor, becoming more abstract and openly interpretable as the portfolio unfolds.
